Band Saw vs Circular Cold Saw: Which Should You Buy?

Short answer: Choose a band saw for large or mixed sections, bundles, structural profiles and lower budgets. Choose a circular cold saw for high volumes of solid bar or thick-wall tube up to about Ø300 mm, where its speed, ±0.1 mm accuracy and clean cut face pay back the higher price.

Think in cost per cut

A cold saw costs more to buy, but if it cuts a Ø60 mm bar in about 15 seconds against a minute or more on a band saw, the labour saved on thousands of pieces quickly covers the difference. Below a few hundred cuts a day, the band saw usually wins. Above that, on bar under Ø150 mm, the cold saw usually wins.

Kerf matters on expensive material

The band saw blade is thinner, so it wastes less material per cut. On cheap mild steel this hardly matters. On expensive alloy or stainless bar cut into many short pieces, a 1.3 mm band saw kerf against a 2.6 mm cold saw kerf can add up over a year.

Many shops run both

A common setup is a cold saw for the high-volume bar sizes and a band saw for everything larger or unusual. See all metal sawing machines, the CNC circular cold saws and the double-column band saws.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cold saw faster than a band saw?

Yes, on solid bar up to about Ø150 mm a TCT cold saw is several times faster, with a smoother cut face.

Which is more accurate?

Our CNC cold saws hold ±0.1 mm on most models; automatic band saws feed to ±0.2 mm.

Can a cold saw cut beams and angles?

Our CS range is designed for solid bar and thick-wall tube. Use a band saw for beams, angles and bundles.

Which wastes less material?

The band saw, because its blade is thinner: 0.9–1.6 mm against 2.0–4.0 mm for a cold saw.
